Various Traditions Associated With Homecoming

If you are American or Canadian, you probably know what homecoming is, but for those from other places, a homecoming is a social event whereby old students are invited back to the campus to celebrate its existence. The event is typically a dance that is held in September or October and there are quite a few traditions that became part of this social event, which we outline in this article.

Sport

As you might expect in the US, sport is traditionally linked to homecoming; American Football, soccer, baseball and basketball are often part of the event, which is usually followed by a dance. Sometimes the students set up a picnic next to the sports arena, using tents and cars, if the weather permits. As the homecoming is usually held in the fall, the dance would probably be held indoors in the evening, after an afternoon of sports.

Cheerleaders

Of course, the school’s cheerleaders would be out in force during breaks between the game; plus there might be other activities during the sporting event. Either way, this is usually a complete day out with many small activities that are unique to that institution, so make sure you order a new designer dress from a leading online boutique.

Homecoming King & Queen

It is common for homecoming organizers to select a boy and girl to be king and queen, much like a beauty pageant. Participants might vote, or the organizers might choose the two best-dressed ex-students, it depends on the institution.  It is traditional for the queen to be crowned first, closely followed by the king.

Soapbox Derby

Texas started this tradition and homecoming participants team up and build their own soapbox and the race is held on the day of the homecoming. This is a fun event that also tests the teamwork skills of the participants, as they have to build a working cart. Students might work on this project the entire semester, which would likely be part of the curriculum. This is a Southern tradition, with California and Texas upholding the tradition.

Marching Band

Some schools have a marching band and the homecoming is the perfect time to dress up and play a few songs. There are only a few occasions in the school year when all the brass instruments, drums and recorders can see the light of day and the homecoming is one of those times.

Evening Dance

For most students, the evening dance is the highlight of the event, as you get to meet all your old friends and find out what they have been up to! It’s best that you coordinate with your dance partner and wear matching outfits, for a really cool look. Why not ask the friends you are still in touch with what they are planning to wear? This might help you avoid an embarrassing clash.

Dress Code

Of course, every school, college and university has its own set of dress codes, and for the homecoming, it is normal for girls to wear a short dress. Most buy homecoming dresses with long sleeves online. If you are unsure about the dress code, talk to the school management for confirmation, which is the safest way forward.

The homecoming is a traditional event that all the students look forward to and if you are looking for the perfect homecoming dress to wow your friends, look no further than the online designer dress boutique.
